Shijun Ma ¨C Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences

Dr Shijun Ma (1915--1991), born in Shangdong in 1915, graduated from Department of Agronomy, Peking University in 1937, and got his Ph.D degree in Minnesota State University in 1951. Dr Ma not only made great contribution in ecology and integrated management of migratory locust, the most harmful pest in China for centuries, but also was the father of ecological engineering and social-economic- natural complex ecosystem theory, and the pioneer in the world to introduce ecology into agriculture, industry and sustainable development. He was one of the founders of modern ecology in China. Dr Ma was the member of Committee of Environmental and Development of Untied Nations, and the contributor of ¡°Our Common Future¡±.

Feng Zongwei - Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering

Academia Feng Zongwei, former vice chairmen of Chinese Association of Ecology and Chinese Association of Forestry, has long studied in the fields of forest ecosystems and ecological restoration, and is one of the founders of investigating acid rain in China. In 1980¡¯s, he organized a symposium on The Effect of Acid Rain on Agriculture and Prevention Strategies attended by representatives from 16 national associations under the Chinese Association of Science and Technology, which advanced the studies of acid rain in China. In last 15 years, he has presided many national and international programs on the effects of acid rain on ecosystems. He was the first scientist who quantitatively estimated the economic loss caused by acid rain in 10 provinces in South China, and posed comprehensive measures for forest restoration in heavily damaged area by acid rain. His work provided a scientific basis for both determination of acid rain control region and prevention of acid rain. So a first class of National Science and Technology Advance Award was approved for his significant achievements. In 1960, Prof. Feng found the Huitong Forest Ecological Station of Chinese Academy of Sciences, elucidated the mechanism of ecological degradation after rotation of Chinese fir, and cultivated mixed forest of fir and phoebe to prevent plantation degradation. In early years, Prof. Feng had proposed to selective cutting in stead of clear cutting for protecting natural pine in northeastern China. Many important suggestions, such as on protection of Xishuangbanna tropical forest and restoration of Daxinanlin forest after great fire, have been paid great attention by national top leaders.
